Second Sight Pictures, in association with SeaFarNorth, is pleased to announce the star-laden documentary Cielo will open in Toronto on August 10, 2018 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Cielo wil be broadcast on CBC documentary in late 2018.
Written, directed by Canadian filmmaker Alison McAlpine, Cielo is a cinematic reverie on the astonishing beauty of the night sky, as experienced in the Atacama Desert, Chile. This sublime nonfiction film drifts between science and spirituality expanding the limits of our imagination. Cielo features encounters with Planet Hunters and the desert’s residents as they share their visions of the stars, mythic stories and existential queries with a contagious sense of wonder.
The world premiere was presented at the New York Film Festival in October 2017. Cielo has since screened at at RIDM (Montreal International Documentary Festival), RVCQ (Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma), Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Salem Film Fest (American Cinematographer Award), DOXA and Hot Docs. The European premiere of Cielo was presented last week at the prestigious Karlovy-Vary International Film Festival.
Cielo is the feature directorial debut from McAlpine, whose previous mid-length film, Second Sight (2008), screened at more than 35 international film festivals. Cielo features astonishing time-lapses shot over 5-7 day periods on Sony FS7 and A7 cameras.
Cielo is a Second Sight Pictures (Alison McAlpine) production, in association with Argus Films (Carmen Garcia), documentary Channel (Jordana Ross) and in co-production with Errante Producciones (Paola Castillo). Cielo was produced with the financial participation of Consejo Nacional de la Cultura Y las Artes, Fondo de Fomento Audiovisual, Gobierno de Chile, La Sodec (Québec), Québec Credit d’impôt cinéma et télévision, Gestation Sodec, Canadian Media Fund, Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, CORFO, Gobierno de Chile, Canada Council for the Arts, and Conseils des Arts et des lettres du Québec.

Juno Films (Elizabeth Sheldon) will release Cielo in the U.S. on August 15 in New York (Film Forum) and August 24 in Los Angeles (Laemmle Fine Arts), with further expansion to follow.
