The Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario Partners with Canadian Nonprofit National Inventors Hall of Fame (Canada) to Inspire Innovation

The Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario (L’Association des professeurs de sciences de l’Ontario) is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Inc. (Canada).

Established in 1890, STAO/APSO’s membership includes science educators from across the province of Ontario. NIHF Canada, a not-for-profit organization, will be collaborating with STAO/APSO on a number of initiatives to further its mission of encouraging excellence in education through leadership and service.

STAO/APSO and NIHF Canada will be working together to provide unique professional development opportunities for STAO/APSO members as well as promoting creativity and advancing the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. This includes, for example, sharing innovative ways for STAO/APSO members to incorporate invention education in their classrooms and highlight Canadian innovation.

“The partnership between STAO/APSO and NIHF Canada comes at a time when Ontario educators are looking for innovative ideas to deliver science curriculum in their classrooms,” said Amy Gorecki, executive director STAO/directrice générale APSO. “This partnership will provide Ontario science educators with resources that emphasize the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in our everyday lives and inspire students with information about the accomplishments and inventions of Canadian innovators.”

Through its innovative STEM education programs, NIHF Canada features inventors as role models who have changed our world for the better, including Canadians such as Class of 2020 Inductee James McEwen, inventor of the first microprocessor-controlled tourniquet system used in thousands of surgeries each day.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with STAO/APSO and its members to inspire future innovators in Ontario,” said Shelley Jones, vice president of NIHF Canada. “Our organizations are both focused on the advancement of science education in Ontario and have some exciting initiatives planned.”

NIHF Canada is inspiring future innovators through programs such as Camp Invention Connect that challenge children in grades K-6 to find their “inner inventor” by learning the process of innovation. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes STEM learning; builds confidence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills; and encourages entrepreneurship — in a fun and engaging environment. In the unprecedented times we’re all experiencing, these lessons are even more valuable. Camp Invention, the in-person program from which Camp Invention Connect was created, was first introduced in Canada last summer with programs held in Ontario.
